Bursary scheme - Travel scholarships

There are up to four bursaries available each year, with awards not normally exceeding £750 each. Preference will be given to applicants from countries ranked lower on the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) (https://hdr.undp.org/en/composite/HDI). The amount provided is dependent on funds available, and in lean years this does not always support four bursaries. WRETF is dependent on donations too.

The bursary is to support, not completely fund, the applicant. If the application is successful, the applicant must ensure they have sufficient funding in place when they submit the application form to cover any shortfall between the full cost and the bursary amount awarded. Please note that the bursary awarded may not be the maximum amount of £750. This is to avoid failures to attend due to lack of funds.

Bursaries are NOT available for an individual's personal study towards gaining a certificate, diploma or degree or other qualification or for previous bursary recipients.

Applications should ideally be submitted at least six months before the conference start date, late applications are unlikely to be processed.

These are the relevant closing dates:

  • 20 January for events taking place after April of the same year.

  • 20 May for events taking place after August of the same year.

  • 20 September for events taking place after December.

Application forms can be found by selecting the relevant applications button.

Applicants should note that they are responsible for arranging their visits or conference attendance, and a registration for conference attendance or a reservation or approval to attend an educational institute MUST be in place at the time of application for a travel bursary. Confirmation MUST be provided at the same time as the application.

Applications MUST provide details of how the WRETF funding is to be applied. (eg travel/accomodation etc)

In addition, applicants MUST state what other sources of funding are currently obtained or promised, so that an assessment and advice can be made.

Recipients of bursaries MUST use the funding as specified in the letter announcing their award and note that bursaries are given solely for the use by the recipient and are not transferable for any other purpose than that for which they are awarded.

Please note that applicants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel insurance and medical/personal insurance whilst attending the conference (or making the educational visit) when supported by a WRETF travel bursary.

Successful applicants will initially receive 70% of the bursary before the event. On receipt of a written report following the event, WRETF will forward the remaining 30%. Note: this report must be received within 60 days of the event; failure to do so will forfeit the 30%. Guidance on the topics of this report will be provided at the time of the initial payment.
